Student Discussion Strategies
Title |
Description |
Resource(s) |
The Stand-Up Game |
Ask the whole class to stand. Each student can sit down once he/she has shared. A "flip" on tradition of raising hands. |
|
Conver-Stations |
Have students engage in small group discussions, but rotate a few members into new groups periodically to provide new thoughts and perspectives. Check out the video. |
|
Dump and Clump |
Group students into pairs. Have students develop or give them a list of terms for the "dumpster." Have students work together to group terms that go together into "clumpsters." |
|
Vocabulary Rating Chart Discussions |
Students can pre-assess their knowledge of vocabulary early in a lesson/unit. Once students have completed the chart, they can share their background knowledge with one another to add on to their charts. The teacher can then focus on unfamiliar vocabulary to students. |
|
Find Someone Who Knows |
Transform your learning targets into a movement and discussion activity. Reframe targets as questions, and have students find peers in the room that can help them find all of the answers. |
|
Paideia Seminars |
Paideia Seminars give a structure for students to discuss texts as a whole class. They have opening questions about central ideas of the text, core text-dependent questions, and personal connection closing questions. |
